Understanding UK Postcodes
The UK postcode system was introduced between 1959 and 1974 by the Royal Mail to automate letter sorting. A full UK postcode consists of two parts: the outward code (e.g. SW1A) which identifies the postal district, and the inward code (e.g. 1AA) which narrows it down to a specific delivery point covering around 15 addresses.
There are approximately 1.8 million postcodes in the UK, grouped into 124 postcode areas. The first one or two letters indicate the area (L for Liverpool, EH for Edinburgh, BT for Belfast), followed by a number for the district. London is split across multiple areas including E, EC, N, NW, SE, SW, W and WC.
Why Postcodes Matter for Property
Your postcode affects almost every aspect of property ownership. It determines your council tax band, which local authority you fall under, your school catchment area, and even your insurance premiums. Two streets in the same town can have significantly different property values simply because of the postcode boundary.
When buying a property, always research the specific postcode rather than relying on the general area reputation. Tools like ours allow you to see actual sold prices, giving you real data to negotiate with rather than relying on estate agent valuations alone.
