How to Fix or Replace Guttering

Keep your home dry and damage-free

Guttering is one of those things you never think about until it fails. A leaking or blocked gutter can cause damp walls, damaged foundations, and stained brickwork. The good news is that most gutter problems are straightforward to fix yourself, and replacement parts are cheap.

Types of Guttering

  • uPVC (plastic): Most common. Cheap, lightweight, easy to fit. Lasts 20-30 years.
  • Cast iron: Traditional. Heavy, expensive, but lasts 50+ years. Common on older homes.
  • Aluminium: Lightweight, rust-proof, 30+ year lifespan. Mid-range price.
  • Half-round vs square: Half-round is traditional, square (ogee) is modern and carries more water.

Clearing Blockages

The most common gutter problem is blockage from leaves, moss, and debris. Clean gutters at least twice a year, ideally in late autumn and late spring. Use a gutter scoop or old kitchen spatula to scrape out debris. Flush with a hose pipe afterwards to check the downpipe is clear.

If the downpipe is blocked, try feeding a drain rod or long flexible wire down from the top. For stubborn blockages, disconnect the downpipe at the nearest joint and clear from below. Consider fitting gutter guards (mesh covers) to prevent future blockages, especially if you have trees nearby.

Fixing Leaking Joints

Leaks at joints are usually caused by failed seals. For uPVC guttering, take the section apart, clean the joint with a cloth, apply new gutter sealant, and clip back together. For cast iron, wire-brush the joint clean and apply gutter mastic sealant.

If the gutter is sagging at a joint, the bracket may have come loose. Refix it or add an additional bracket nearby. Guttering should have a slight fall towards the downpipe of about 1:350 (roughly 3mm per metre).

Replacing a Section

uPVC guttering is designed to clip together, making replacement easy. Measure the section you need, buy the matching profile (half-round, square, deep-flow), and the appropriate connectors. Unclip the old section, clean the brackets, and clip the new section in. Always use rubber gasket connectors or sealant at joints.

For a full replacement on a semi-detached house, expect to pay £150-300 for materials or £400-800 for professional fitting. Cast iron replacement is significantly more expensive at £1,000-2,500.

When to Call a Professional

If your guttering is very high, on a three-storey building, or made of cast iron that needs specialist repair, it is safer and more cost-effective to call a professional. Also call a professional if you suspect the fascia board behind the gutter is rotten, as this needs replacing before new guttering can be fitted.

Quick Checklist

  • • Clean gutters twice a year
  • • Check for leaks during heavy rain
  • • Ensure gutters slope towards downpipes
  • • Replace brackets if guttering sags
  • • Fit gutter guards if near trees
