Boiler Replacement Guide UK — Costs & Grants 2026

A new boiler is not exciting, but it is essential. If your boiler is over 10-15 years old, it is likely running at 70-80% efficiency, costing you £200-400 more per year in gas than a modern condensing boiler. This guide covers costs, types, grants, and whether a heat pump makes sense for your home.

Boiler Replacement Costs 2026

Boiler TypeSupply CostInstalled CostBest For

Combi vs System vs Regular

Combi Boiler

Heats water on demand — no hot water tank needed. The most popular choice in the UK (70%+ of installations). Compact, efficient, and provides instant hot water. Limitation: if two showers run simultaneously, water pressure drops. Not ideal for homes with more than one bathroom in heavy use.

System Boiler

Works with a hot water cylinder (usually in the airing cupboard). Stores hot water so multiple taps can run at full pressure simultaneously. Better for larger homes with 2+ bathrooms. Requires space for the cylinder.

Regular (Conventional) Boiler

Requires both a hot water cylinder and cold water tanks (usually in the loft). Most common in older homes. If your existing system is regular and works well, replacing like-for-like is the simplest and cheapest option.

Top Boiler Brands

  • Worcester Bosch — Market leader. Reliable, excellent support, 10-12 year warranties through accredited installers.
  • Vaillant — German-engineered, very reliable. The ecoTEC range is popular. 10-year warranties available.
  • Viessmann — Premium German brand, excellent build quality. Growing in UK popularity.
  • Ideal — British brand, good value. The Logic and Vogue ranges are solid mid-range options.
  • Baxi — Budget-friendly with decent reliability. The 800 Combi is a popular entry-level choice.

Grants and Financial Help

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The government offers £7,500 off an air source heat pump installation through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (running until March 2028). This brings the effective cost of a heat pump to £5,000-8,000 installed. Your installer applies on your behalf. Requirements: your home must have a valid EPC, and the heat pump must replace an existing fossil fuel heating system.

ECO4 Scheme

If you receive certain benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, etc.), you may qualify for a free or heavily subsidised boiler replacement under the ECO4 scheme. Contact your energy supplier or check the Simple Energy Advice website.

0% Finance

Many installers offer 0% finance over 2-5 years. This makes a £3,000 boiler cost £50-125/month with no interest. Check the total repayable amount carefully — some "0%" deals have arrangement fees.

Heat Pumps — Are They Worth It?

Air source heat pumps are 3-4x more efficient than gas boilers, but electricity costs more per unit than gas. Net savings depend on your home's insulation. In a well-insulated home (EPC C or above), a heat pump can cut heating bills by 20-40%. In a poorly insulated home, running costs can be similar to or higher than gas. Insulate first, then consider a heat pump.

Practical considerations: heat pumps need outdoor space for the unit (size of a washing machine), run at lower flow temperatures (larger radiators may be needed), and work best with underfloor heating. Installation takes 2-3 days.

Signs You Need a New Boiler

  • Age: over 12-15 years old
  • Frequent breakdowns or expensive repairs
  • Rising gas bills despite similar usage
  • Radiators take a long time to heat up
  • Strange noises (kettling, banging, gurgling)
  • Yellow flame instead of blue (carbon monoxide risk — urgent)

Choosing an Installer

Gas boilers must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer — this is a legal requirement. Check their registration at gassaferegister.co.uk. For heat pumps, look for MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited installers — this is required for the BUS grant. Get three quotes, check reviews, and ask about warranties. Most manufacturers offer extended warranties (up to 12 years) only through their accredited installer networks.
