How to Paint a Fence
A freshly painted fence transforms a garden instantly. The job is straightforward but preparation makes the difference between a finish that lasts one year and one that lasts five. Here is how to do it properly.
Choose Your Product
Fence paint (Cuprinol, Ronseal): Opaque colour, covers old stain, good for hiding imperfections. Lasts 3-5 years. Fence stain/treatment: Semi-transparent, lets wood grain show through, nourishes the wood. Lasts 2-3 years. Creosote substitutes: Dark brown/black, traditional look, strong protection. Smells for a few days.
Tools You Need
Fence sprayer (fastest — does a 6ft panel in 2 minutes), or a 4-inch brush, or a roller with a long-pile sleeve. Plus: dust sheets for plants, masking tape for edges, wire brush for prep, bucket of soapy water, and old clothes you do not mind ruining.
Preparation
This is where most people skip steps and regret it. Clean the fence with a stiff brush to remove moss, dirt, and flaking paint. For very dirty fences, use a pressure washer on low setting. Let it dry completely — at least 24 hours after washing. Repair loose panels and hammer in any protruding nails. Protect plants with dust sheets and tape over anything you do not want painted.
Application
Work in dry weather with no rain forecast for 24 hours. Temperature above 5C. Start at the top and work down so drips get painted over. Do the edges and awkward bits with a brush first, then fill in panels with your sprayer or roller. Two thin coats are better than one thick coat. Allow 4-6 hours between coats.
How Much Do You Need?
A standard 6x6ft fence panel takes about 1 litre per coat. A typical garden with 10 panels needs 5 litres (one 5L tin) per coat. Buy enough for two coats — 10L total for 10 panels. Sprayers use slightly more product than brushes due to overspray.
Pro Tips
Paint both sides if the fence is yours (check boundaries first). Stir the paint thoroughly before and during use. Fence sprayers from Ronseal or Wagner are worth the 30-40 GBP investment if you have more than 5 panels. Do it in spring after frosts end for maximum lifespan.
