How to Install a Doorbell

Whether you are fitting a simple wireless doorbell or upgrading to a smart video doorbell like Ring or Nest, this guide walks you through the process. Most installations take 15-30 minutes with basic tools.

Wireless Doorbell (Easiest)

Tools needed: Screwdriver, drill, wall plugs, level. Time: 15 minutes.

Choose your button position — typically at 1.2-1.5m height, on the door frame or wall beside it. Mark screw holes with a pencil, drill pilot holes, insert wall plugs, and screw the button plate in place. Insert batteries if needed. Plug the chime unit into any indoor socket and pair it with the button (usually just press a button on both units simultaneously).

Smart Video Doorbell (Ring/Nest/Eufy)

Tools needed: Drill, masonry bit, screwdriver, level, phone for app setup. Time: 30 minutes.

Download the app first and create your account. Choose mounting position — you want camera at chest height (1.2m) angled slightly downward. Use the included bracket as a drilling template. Drill holes, insert wall plugs, mount the bracket, and click the doorbell onto it. Connect to WiFi through the app. If battery-powered, charge fully before mounting. If wired, connect to existing doorbell wires (low voltage, safe to handle).

Wired Doorbell (Traditional)

If replacing an existing wired doorbell, switch off the power at the consumer unit first. Remove the old button, connect the two low-voltage wires to the new button terminals (polarity does not matter for AC bells), and mount the new button. Replace the chime unit inside if upgrading. Restore power and test.

Tips

For brick walls, use a 6mm masonry drill bit and brown wall plugs. For UPVC door frames, self-tapping screws work without plugs. Angle video doorbells to avoid filming the public highway (GDPR). Test WiFi signal strength at the door before buying a smart doorbell — you may need a WiFi extender.
