How to Put Up Floating Shelves

Floating shelves look clean and modern because there are no visible brackets. The fixings are hidden inside the shelf itself. They are surprisingly easy to install once you understand the method — most people can fit one in 20 minutes.

Tools and Materials

Spirit level (essential — your eye will lie to you), pencil, drill, appropriate wall plugs for your wall type, tape measure, and the shelf kit (which includes the concealed bracket). A stud finder is helpful but not essential.

Know Your Wall Type

Brick/block: Use 6mm masonry bit and red wall plugs. Can hold heavy loads (15-20kg per shelf). Plasterboard (stud wall): Use special plasterboard fixings (spring toggles or gripit fixings) or ideally find the timber stud behind. Plasterboard alone holds only 5-10kg. Dot and dab: Common in new builds — the plasterboard is glued to blockwork with a gap behind. You need extra-long fixings that reach the block.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Hold the bracket against the wall at your desired height. Use the spirit level to ensure it is perfectly horizontal. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. 2. Drill holes at your marks. Insert wall plugs. 3. Screw the bracket firmly to the wall. Check it is level again. 4. Slide the shelf onto the bracket rods/plate. Some shelves have a grub screw underneath to tighten and secure.

Getting Them Level

Never trust your eye or measure from the ceiling (ceilings are rarely level). Always use a spirit level. For multiple shelves in a column, measure the gaps between them from a single reference point on one side, then use the level across.

Weight Limits

A typical floating shelf on a solid wall holds 10-15kg safely. That is plenty for books, plants, and ornaments. Do not overload — if the shelf starts to droop, the hidden bracket is bending and may eventually pull from the wall. For heavy items, use wider shelves with longer bracket rods.

Common Mistakes

Not using a spirit level. Using the wrong fixings for the wall type. Not drilling deep enough (the plug should sit fully in the wall, not in the plaster). Positioning too high — shelves look best at eye level or slightly below.
